The princess Juliana International a Airport Operating Company
N.V (PJIAE) operator of the Princess Juliana International
Airport is in process of executing phase II of its master
plan. Phase II, for which construction officially commenced
on June 18, 2004, will ensure that PJIAE will continue to
meet the increasing demands of the traveling public.
The phase II project represents a capital investment of
US$ 87 million. It consists of a new terminal building,
extended aircraft apron, increased car parking capacity
and upgraded infrastructure including rerouting of the airport
road around the new terminal facility.
The 27,000 square=meter terminal will more than double
the size and passenger capacity compared to the current
facility: it will be able to accommodate 2.5 million passengers
per year – 1.3 million more than it can now. With
42 check-in positions, outfitted with CUTE system, provision
is made to amply handle current airlines and accommodate
new airlines entries.
In the terminal 2,815 m2 will be dedicated to commercial
services, This more than triple the space presently allocated
to non-aeronautical commercial services. Within the short
PJIAE will commence with the Request for Proposal procedure.
PJIAE will then invite interested companies to submit proposals
to operate identified concessions at the airport.
The new facilities will ensure continued compliance with
the ever-changing international safety, security and passenger
comfort standards and will provide the island with a state-of-the-art
modern facility that truly reflect the spirit, character
and friendliness of St.Maarten/St.Martin.
Once completed the Phase II developments will also anchor
and enhanced St.Maarten’s position as a preferred
tourist destination and PJIAE’s position as the premier
gate way in the northeastern Caribbean
