For some years ago the roads on St.Maarten were (in)famous for the detrimental condition for the cars and the many potholes. Tourists, businesses and people of St. Maarten would be accommodated with a real fine road network. So Government listened tot those demands and started a Road network Improvement plan. And so the road-infrastructure of St. Maarten has been a subject of improvement for the last 5 years and still is.
Last year an important new road, Link 1, from Frontstreet in Philipsburg to the Airport was realized. Not only a very scenery route but also important for reaching the Medical Center as well as the center of the town, avoiding the congested area near the Bushroad. The bridge next to Great Bay
Also mainroads as the A.T.Illidgeroad, Middle region, Suckergarden and Arch road have been reconstructed and drainage facilities and underground cables have been realized. Public lightning has been realized alongside these roads as well as walkways. An important access road to the industrial area of Cay Bay, Cay Bay Road, as well as the Union road, of great importance for the businesses in Cole Bay, have been built or rebuilt. Ground Dove road, another important road for industrial activities, has been upgraded recently.
The roads that have been resurfaced were also equipped with streetlights and walkways.
For the coming years another connection from Philipsburg to the French side and the Airport will be accomplished. As a first improvement for the traffic from Philipsburg over the Cole Bay hill to Simpson bay, to prevent too much stopovers, a roundabout will be constructed very soon. For the residential areas a phased program is in execution to surface the many dirt roads in the districts.
The area round Great Bay has been and will be improved by building the boardwalk, the upgrading of the Watheysquare and the reconstruction of the Frontstreet into an attractive shopping area that tourists can feel comfortable in.
Drainage
In tropical areas heavy rainstorms can occur. For dealing with the –sometimes large quantities of - storm water that has to be drained away, several works are and will be carried out to minimize the inconvenience or damage. To be mentioned is the dredging of the Fresh Pond that will also improve the water quality, the culverts and chute alongside the Archroad and Suckergarden road. Recently, improvements were made in the vicinity of the Tropical casino.
Sewage
Preparations are taken to apply an extension of the existing sewage system in most dense parts of the island. The present treatment plant will be modernized and extended so it will be ready for the future and residents as well as businesses will be able to enjoy a beautiful island. Government wants to keep it that way so efforts are made and will be made to preserve the beautiful nature without possibilities to enjoy it.
Garbage
For the processing of waste a study together with the French Side has been accomplished and plans are now to be worked out for an incineration plant that can process all the garbage form the whole island.
Assistance
In 2004 assignments has been given to build a new fire department and a new ambulance building.
